During the Depression era, photojournalist Marion Post Wolcott documented a group of Creole and African American sharecroppers en route to the local merchandise store to purchase provisions. According to thirteen year old John Sarpy: "They didn't pay no money. Every week they'd give us a "white horse" and we'd get on the wagon and go down to the store and buy our groceries for the week" (The Shreveport Times, 1979)
Pictured are Charlie Sarpy Jr., V. L. Odum, Charlie Sarpy Sr., Charlie Roque, Willie Forman (Foreman?), Phelix Sarpy, John Sarpy (interviewee), Jerdon (Jourdan) Sarpy, and Dazey (Daisy?) Roque. |
