Emitte Roque merchandise, 5 cents token. Used to purchase goods at Roque Merchandise. The token is octagon shaped with inscription "Emitte Roque, Natchez, Louisiana" and "Good for 5 in Merchandise". The token is a combination of several metals to include zinc, and aluminum. |

Tokens or trade coins were tender for the purchase of goods, redeemable only at the store minted on the token. These coins were known in the Cane River area as "White Horse" or "Scrip". These tokens extended credit to employees usually the tenant farmer or sharecropper which labored the Roque farm. The inscribe token was redeemable only at the particular business on the coin. Tokens were used from the late 1880s until the 1930s. |
